Back to Top Websters Dictionary defines a Milestone as "A significant event in history or in a person's life". Local 1906 had one of each in the past year. In July 2004, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our Charter, and in July 2005, Bud H. our Business Agent for 18 years retired. During our 51 year history we have had only 5 Business Agents, our first was George W. followed by Ed H., Gary M., Dave M. and in 1987 we elected Bud.This averages out to one agent every 10 years. Our local was in existance for only 12 years when Bud joined the union. No sooner had he become an apprentice in our young local when he was called to duty by his country during the Viet Nam War. Bud fulfilled his obligation serving as a United States Marine. After returning home from the service he completed his millwright apprenticeship. Bud's concern for 1906 was apparent early on earning him the respect of everyone in the local, and he was soon elected our Financial Secretary. In 1987, we elected Bud as BA in a landslide. We are extremely fortunate to have Bud almost double that 10 year BA average. Over the past 18 years he provided us and the entire Brotherhood with stable, level-headed leadership earning him the respect and admiration of everyone, including our top Officers. In a recent conversation with Doug Baines the topic turned to Bud's retirement. Doug spoke of how much Bud will be missed by the top officers in the UBC. I told him I know how they feel because all of us in 1906 are fortunate to know the benefits of his contributions to the Brotherhood, our apprenticeship, our members, and our contractors. Think of the significance of these two events in one year. I will miss a very good friend. Enjoy good health and happiness, Bud. Back to Top Summer is just around the corner. Don't forget where your income to take that vacation was made, LU 1906. Attend your local union meetings. Back to Top Congratulations to Bill Mc on winning the Millwright portion of the Annual Contest/Openhouse on May 6th. As usual it was a good contest with all the men doing an outstanding job, but Bill performed best and walked away with top honors. Next time you see Bill on the job or at a meeting tell him you're proud he is in 1906. May is a busy month for LU 1906. First, the Annual Contest/Open House takes place on the 6th starting at 8:00 am. Make sure to stop by the Apprentice School after work or during the day to cheer on our soon-to-be journeymen. This is an important day for them, set a few minutes aside and see what they build in 8 hours! Second, it's Mothers Day on the 8th. Don't forget! Third, nominations for Executive Board positions are on the 10th. Now is the time to step up and run for a position, especially if you're always whining about how things are within the local. Make a difference and run for an office. Fouth, our Annual Memorial Day Set-out is on the 24th. Come to this meeting and honor the MEN who made huge sacrifices to get 1906 started, and all the others who worked to make it what it is and keep it going. Fifth, on the 31st, applications are being accepted for apprenticeship. If you know someone interested in joining the local to make it better (not just to collect a paycheck) tell them about our program. Back to Top I hope all our retired Brothers will attend the Pension Meeting at the Apprentice school Tuesday April 4, 2005 at 8: 00 a.m. Come out to see old friends and here what is happening with your pension. Back to Top Spring Journeyman Upgrade Registration begins March 1, 2005 at the apprenticeship school from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Sharpen your skills attend the class of your choice. Back to Top Spend an evening out, attend your local union meeting. Happy New Year! 2004 was a good year for LU1906 celebrating out 50th Anniversary and plentiful work. As 2005 begins take a moment and reflect on the blessings all of us have: family, health, friends, good paying jobs, a great local, good representatives, and a bright future. Work safe in the coming year, get active and stay active in your local. Remember, union dues should be paid before the new quarter begins. Jan. Feb. March, should have been paid in Dec. Local 1906 has the following weeks reserved in Las Vegas for the GE Turbine Training: Feburary 21, 28, March 7, April 18, May 16, June 20. Each class holds 10 people. If you have the prerequisite training or will complete it soon please call the hall and schedule a week. Back to top Back to top
